B. H. Rutter Post #47
Dowagiac, Cass County, Michigan

Organized August 28, 1915

This Post was named to honor Benjamin H. Rutter of Dowagiac. He enlisted in Company M, 1st Michigan Cavalry on August 20, 1861 at age 21. He was taken prisoner at Trevellian Station, Virginia, June 11, 1864. He was returned to the Company on June 20, 1864. He was discharged at the end of his service at Detroit, Michigan, September 24, 1864.

The Post was Mustered with 17 Charter Members. 

The first Post Commander was John Bilderback who served in Company M, 1st Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted as a Private August 20, 1861 at the age of 18. He reenlisted on December 21, 1863. He was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Company D on November 17, 1865. He was discharged at Salt Lake City, Utah Territory on March 10, 1866.

The Post met at the Library on Commercial Street in 1915. In 1916 they moved to the Odd Fellows Hall on Spalding Street (Beason or Besson Street). They report in 1928 "No meetings". 

The last Post Commander was Nicholas Brook who enlisted in Company A, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 20, 1861. He was discharged from Company H, 25th Pennsylvania Infantry on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability August 3, 1863.

The Post was disbanded in December 1933.
