Shelby
This memorial, depicting an infantryman at parade rest, was erected by the Shields Post No. 68. It is located in a park bounded by Maple and Third Streets, and Oceana Drive (Old US-31), and faces the Methodist Church across the street. The benches at its base are a modern addition. The park held a large Civil War cannon until the gun was lost to the scrap drives of World War II; from the description of lifelong residents, and a postcard from the 1920's, it appears that it was a columbiad.
